The Old Chapel

Our main studio is located on the glazed balcony at The Old Chapel, Oakridge Lynch, Stroud. Acquired in 2008, Gransmore Architects took on the challenge of converting this unique building at the heart of the village into a family home and a studio for the practice. The school room to the side of the main chapel was erected in 1797 and the main chapel with its stunning views of the Golden Valley was built in 1876. Whilst numerous repairs, structural strengthening, insulating and upgrades have been made to the building, the exterior of the chapel has been left unchanged. Once you enter the building however a meeting of contemporary and traditional design create a unique and inspiring space in which to live and work.

The interior design of the chapel focuses on manipulating light through through form and volume to the space. Hanging floors, spiral staircases, opening and closing screens, sunken lounges and a glazed balcony coincide with the stunning rose window, the numerous trusses and stained glass that make up this beautiful Methodist chapel.

Photovoltaic panels and solar thermal panels have all been installed in order to create a zero energy building. The landscaping and introduction of a rill in the gardens of the chapel have created a wildlife haven and an enjoyable space for the family to spend warm summer evenings. The practice welcomes all current and prospective clients to come and see this unique architectural project for themselves.
